Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialized, gentle hands-on technique designed to encourage the movement of lymph fluid through the lymphatic system. Unlike traditional massage, MLD does not involve deep pressure, kneading, or muscle manipulation. Instead, it uses light, rhythmic, and precise movements applied to the skin to support natural lymphatic flow.
The lymphatic system plays an important role in fluid balance, immune function, and the removal of cellular waste. When lymph flow becomes sluggish or the body is experiencing swelling, MLD may help support the body's natural processes.
Potential Benefits
Depending on the individual and the reason for receiving MLD, potential benefits may include:
Supporting healthy lymphatic circulation
Helping reduce or manage swelling and fluid retention
Supporting recovery following certain surgeries or procedures
Promoting relaxation and a sense of calm
Supporting circulation and fluid balance
Helping relieve feelings of heaviness or congestion
Supporting the body's natural immune and fluid-management processes
MLD can be particularly helpful for individuals experiencing certain types of swelling or lymphatic congestion. When appropriate, it may also be incorporated into a broader treatment plan recommended by a qualified healthcare provider.
What to Expect During Your Session
MLD is performed using very light pressure and slow, rhythmic movements. The technique is generally much lighter than a traditional massage. You may notice gentle stretching, sweeping, or pumping movements across the skin.
Depending on your needs, the session may include work on areas beyond the location of swelling. Because the lymphatic system is interconnected, your practitioner may work along pathways that support the movement of fluid.
You will remain comfortably covered throughout the session, with only the areas being treated exposed. Many people find MLD deeply relaxing, and some may feel very calm or sleepy during or after the session.
MLD Is Not a Traditional Massage
MLD is a specialized therapeutic technique, not a conventional massage. The goal is not to work deeply into the muscles or release muscular tension. Instead, the focus is on gentle stimulation of the lymphatic system and supporting the movement of lymph fluid.
